“You Gave Us More Time”: Grateful patient reunites with lifesaving ambulance crew
Date: 5 August 2025A man who came perilously close to losing his life has personally thanked the ambulance crew whose swift response and expert care helped him defy the odds and survive.

Roger Field, 60, was reunited with paramedics Steph Oldham, Simon Sayers, and Alicia Ray – the first responders who arrived at his Brandon home on 10 March 2025 when he went into respiratory distress.
It was Roger’s daughter, Jasmine, a midwife by profession, who dialled 999 when he suddenly became gravely ill.
Steph and Simon were first on scene in an ambulance and quickly recognised the severity of Roger’s condition. They called for additional support, including critical care resources and the Fire and Rescue Service to assist with safely moving Roger from the property due to its layout.
Alicia Ray arrived shortly after in a rapid response vehicle, followed by paramedic Gregory Corns in an ambulance officer vehicle, and a critical care team from East Anglian Air Ambulance.
When loaded onto the ambulance, Roger’s heart stopped. The ambulance team immediately began resuscitation efforts. After around 10 minutes, they successfully restarted his heart.
Roger was later diagnosed with multiple organ failure and spent weeks in hospital. Thanks to the combined efforts of the ambulance crews and the team at West Suffolk Hospital, he has made a remarkable recovery.
Paramedic Steph Oldham said:
“We were so pleased to be asked to meet Roger again today. It was a humbling reminder of why we do what we do.
“To be able to give Roger and his family time they might have lost is a privilege.”
Roger Field said:
“I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for the incredible team who came to my aid. Their speed, skill, and compassion saved my life, and I’ll never forget that.
“Meeting them again was emotional – but it gave me the chance to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart. They gave me more time with my family, and that’s the greatest gift anyone could give.”
