New Ipswich ambulance hub set to boost emergency response and staff wellbeing

Date: 7 August 2025

The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) has officially received the keys to its brand-new, state-of-the-art ambulance hub on Ransomes Industrial Estate in Ipswich.

Work is now underway to fit out the 2,060 m² facility, with the hub expected to become operational by late September, with an official opening planned for October.

Designed with the future in mind, the £12.81 million hub will feature a fully integrated vehicle repair workshop and a dedicated vehicle preparation area, helping to keep more ambulances on the road and ready to respond.

It will also provide comprehensive “make ready” services, ensuring vehicles are cleaned, restocked and maintained efficiently.

The new facility will serve as a base for around 100 staff members, who will relocate from the current outdated site on Woodbridge Road East.

Staff welfare has been prioritised in the design, with quiet rooms, relaxation areas, and a wellbeing garden included to support mental health and morale.

A two-storey car park will provide space for 78 cars and 29 ambulances, with the option to expand by two additional levels if needed in the future.

Funding includes £10 million from the Department of Health and Social Care, with EEAST contributing a further £2.81 million.

Sustainability is a key focus of the development. The hub incorporates smart technologies and over 390 m² of photovoltaic (PV) panels, enabling a significant portion of its energy needs to be met through on-site renewable generation – supporting the Trust’s ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions.

Neill Moloney, Chief Executive of EEAST, said:

“We’re excited to be moving into this state-of-the-art hub, which represents a significant investment in our people and the future of ambulance services in Ipswich.

“This modern, purpose-built facility is a major upgrade from our current base and has been designed with staff wellbeing and operational performance at its core. It’s a vital step forward in creating the kind of environment that helps our teams thrive and deliver the best possible care to our communities.”
