Former jockey wins prestigious industry award for second career at EEAST

Date: 6 November 2025

Former jockey and West Suffolk-based trainee Emergency Medical Technician, Thomas Brown, has won a prestigious award in recognition of his transition into a second career with the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST).

Thomas was named the overall winner at the 2025 JETS (Jockey Education and Training Scheme) Richard Davis Awards, held at Warwick Racecourse on Tuesday 4 November. The ceremony was hosted by former top jockey Tom Scudamore.

During his seven-year racing career, Thomas rode 123 winners, including a standout victory in the John Smith's Cup at York. However, a serious knee injury in 2022, at the age of 30, forced him to reconsider his future. With support from JETS, he began a new journey with EEAST.

Despite having no prior medical experience, Thomas was drawn to a role that offered both human connection and the adrenaline rush he once found on the racetrack. He began by shadowing racecourse medical teams, completed a basic first aid course, and then undertook intensive training with EEAST.

Since joining EEAST, Thomas has progressed – from Emergency Care Assistant to Trainee Emergency Medical Technician – and is now on the pathway to becoming a fully qualified Paramedic.

Reflecting on his journey, Thomas said: "I feel I've carried forward the determination, discipline, and ability to perform under pressure from my time as a jockey into my second career with the ambulance service.

"Adapting to a completely new profession has been challenging – balancing academic study with long and unpredictable shifts – but I'm proud to be making a difference and having a positive impact on the community every day."

Jemma Varela, Head of Clinical Operations for Suffolk and North East Essex at EEAST, added: "Thomas has been a great addition to our team in Suffolk. Since joining us, he's gone from strength to strength, fully embracing both the learning and practical aspects of the role.

"He's brought valuable transferable skills from his time in the racing industry as a jockey – particularly strong communication with patients and colleagues, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

"Thomas is currently on an internal pathway to becoming a paramedic, and we're confident he has a bright and successful future ahead with the ambulance service."
