UK's oldest volunteer community responder still giving back to her community

Date: 4 June 2025

The UK's oldest volunteer community first responder (CFR) for an NHS ambulance service is still serving her local community at 88 years old.

Carol Moss, who lives near Manningtree, has been a volunteer CFR for the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) for over 23 years. During that time she has responded to more than 1,000 medical emergencies, often arriving first on scene to begin supporting patients before ambulance crews arrive.

Remarkably, she still volunteers hundreds of hours a month for the Trust. In the first five months of 2025, Carol has averaged over 260 volunteer hours per month, and is 'on-call' most days to respond to medical emergencies in her local area.

Carol said: "I never imagined I would still be volunteering after 23 years, but I love it. Every call is a chance to help someone in need, and that is what keeps me going. I am proud of the vital role CFRs play in helping people in our communities at their time of need."

Carol is a retired teacher, and her extraordinary contribution to the local community was formally recognised in 2023, when local MP James Cartlidge presented her with the Community Champion Award.

Lorna Hayes, EEAST's Head of Community Response, said: "Carol is an inspiration to us all. Her unwavering commitment, compassion and resilience has saved lives and brought comfort to countless families. She is a shining example of what it means to serve your community."

EEAST has a variety of different volunteer roles. For more information about the volunteer opportunities available, go to our website.
