Stroke survivors and their carers in Maldon have learned vital CPR skills in a special training session led by an Emergency Medical Technician from the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST).

Andrew Ross, who is based at Braintree Ambulance Station, was invited by the Maldon Stroke Group to help people feel more confident about what to do in a cardiac emergency.

More than 30 people attended the session at Fullbridge Church in Maldon. Andrew made sure the session was easy to follow and suitable for everyone.

He demonstrated how to perform CPR and how to use a public defibrillator (AED), and also explained other ways people can help if they aren't able to do CPR themselves. This includes: asking other people nearby for help; calling 999 and giving a clear location so the ambulance can find the patient.

Andrew said this session was especially memorable because the group took such an active part.

Andrew said:

“This was one of the most enjoyable sessions I have done. There were around 30 people – more than I expected.

“The Maldon Stroke Group asked for a CPR and defibrillator demonstration. I changed the session so it suited the group’s needs, and that helped keep everyone interested.

“Some people thought they would not be able to perform CPR in an emergency, but I focused on what else they can do – like calling 999 and helping guide the ambulance service.”

Marion Rice, from the Maldon Stroke Group, which is affiliated with the Stroke Association, said the content and delivery was excellent.

She added:

“Andrew was brilliant, and we were very grateful for his time.

“We try to make our meetings helpful as well as enjoyable. We cover things like fire safety, scams, home security and advice on daily living after a stroke.

“Andrew’s CPR and defibrillator session was very informative, and it was something we have wanted to offer for a long time. The talk and demonstration were excellent.”
