Ambulance crew commended for bravery during stabbing incident

Date: 9 December 2025

An East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) crew has been formally recognised for their bravery after risking their own safety to save the life of a stabbing victim in Cambridge earlier this summer.

South Cambs Local Area Manager, James Norman, Emergency medical technician Stephen Hughes, emergency care assistant Lewis Smith and CEO of EEAST Neill Moloney.

Emergency Medical Technician Stephen Hughes and Emergency Care Assistant Lewis Smith were dispatched to reports of a man suffering multiple stab wounds inside a property in Cambridge.

On arrival, Stephen entered the property believing the scene was secure, but quickly realised the attackers were still inside - and one was armed.

Despite the immediate danger, Stephen acted decisively, removing the patient from the property and returning to the ambulance, where Lewis was preparing equipment.
Aware of the threat, the crew secured themselves inside the vehicle, updated the dispatcher, and began administering life-saving treatment, all while knowing armed assailants could still be nearby.

They were later joined by Leading Operations Manager Jared Walbridge, who also demonstrated remarkable composure and bravery by supporting the crew in the ambulance.

Police arrived shortly afterwards to secure the scene, enabling the team to meet the critical care team stood-to nearby and transport the patient to hospital. The patient was discharged a few days later.

Stephen and Lewis were presented with commendations for their bravery at a recent ceremony at Cambridge Ambulance Station. Chief Executive Neill Moloney said: “All three members of staff who attended this incident demonstrated EEAST’s values of professionalism and dedication to the welfare and safety of our patients. Stephen and Lewis showed exceptional composure and courage in putting their patient’s needs first, even when they knew they were in a potentially dangerous situation.”

Notes for editors: This remains a live police investigation and no further details of the incident can be disclosed at this time.
