Statement on Jaywick staff assault

Date: 01 June 2017

Following an incident in Jaywick last night where one of our members of staff was assaulted we have issued the following statement along with our colleagues at Essex Police:

Police received a report of an attempted robbery in Brooklands, Jaywick, shortly before 11.45pm yesterday, Wednesday, May 31. A man has approached a paramedic and demanded drugs from his vehicle, while holding a Stanley knife to his neck. The paramedic refused and the suspect left. The paramedic suffered minor injuries to his neck and arm. The suspect is described as a white man, around 6ft tall and of medium build.

An East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokesperson said, “Under no circumstances is it acceptable to assault our staff and volunteers in the line of duty. In any cases where this does happen, we work closely with the police to see that justice is dealt as we have a zero tolerance approach to any form of violence and aggression to staff. We continue to support all of those who are affected by assaults and will always support and advocate for the prosecution of those who do so.”

DCI Leighton Hammett said, “This is an appalling incident where a paramedic was attacked while trying to do his job, which is to help those in need. For someone to target a person in this position is a disgrace. We, as well as members of the public, have no tolerance for this type of behaviour and are eager to find out the identity of this person. “Essex Police continue to work closely with the ambulance service and members of the public in order to do this and bring them to justice. “We believe someone local to the area will have information about this incident and we urge them to come forward. Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Clacton CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
