Drowning Prevention Week
Date: 21 June 2021
Did you know that more than 400 people accidentally drown in the UK and Ireland every year and many more have non-fatal experiences, sometimes suffering life-changing injuries?
Drowning Prevention Week (DPW) aims to equip everybody across the UK and Ireland with the skills and knowledge, to make the right decisions about water safety.
As summer approaches, we need to help people to understand what to do in an emergency.
Around 44% of accidental drownings happen between May and August.
Over 55% of parents surveyed said they would not be confident their child would know what to do if they fell into open water.
The DPW campaign, created by the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), encourages parents, schools, leisure centres and communities to use its free water safety resources, to give children the skills to enjoy a lifetime of fun in the water.
