Certificate of Bravery awarded to nine year old who helped save her father’s life

Date: 24 September 2019

Bravery award presented to child caller, Jia Yi Wan

A nine year old girl has saved her father’s life by calling 999 when she believed he was in cardiac arrest, despite English not being her native language.

Jia Ya Wan was at their family home in Bedford on Tuesday 7th May when her father, David Wan, fell unconscious and she made the life-saving call.

At 5am, Jia made a 999 call to police to say she believed her father was in cardiac arrest.

Bedfordshire police were then able to alert our ambulance control room in Bedford, who immediately dispatched a rapid response car, an ambulance and an ambulance officer to their home.

On arrival, crews quickly discovered that the patient David was having a myocardial infarction (MI) and conveyed him immediately to the nearest PPCI centre at Lister Hospital, Stevenage.

Craig Borrett, Assistant General Manager for EEAST said: “We are pleased to say that David survived the medical event, but this was only made possible due to the bravery of his daughter Jia.

“The family originate from China and her mum who was also on scene does not speak English.

“Calling 999 can be a challenge for an adult, let alone a child. It would be safe to say without her intervention her Dad would probably have died!”

Due to the language barrier, Jia then assisted the paramedics in the journey to Lister Hospital and continued to act as a translator between the crew, hospital staff and her mother.

On Saturday 14th September Andrew Allen, Newly Qualified Paramedic and Phil Elvidge, Senior Paramedic for EEAST welcomed Jia Ya Wan and her father to Kempston Ambulance Station to present her with a certificate to recognise her brave actions.

Andrew said: “Jia is an amazing little girl and deserved to be commended for what she did.

“It is truly humbling to know that she and the rest of her family are able to enjoy many more years with their father David.

“It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Jia and her family to station and present her with a certificate.”
