Ambulance service appoints three new non-executive directors

Date: 09 May 2018

Three new non-executive directors have joined the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST).

Tom Spink, Alison Wigg and Lizzy Firmin have been appointed to the Trust’s board of directors, which functions as the decision-making body for the organisation.

Lizzy Firmin – Non-Executive Director

Lizzy has extensive board experience gained in the private and public sector in both executive and non-executive roles, having in the past worked with the North East Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (NHS) and the UK Border Force. Lizzy is looking forward to meeting the people who make up the Trust.

Lizzy said: “Having held previous non-executive positions within the NHS, I would say I am very passionate about our health service and the people who work within it. Having also worked for frontline operational organisations for many years in executive positions, I feel I have some understanding of the types of challenges we face here at EEAST. From what I have seen so far, it is clear that the people who work for EEAST are very driven, loyal and committed to what they do, which is inspiring.  I am very excited about getting out and about in the organisation and meeting more staff; it is the best way the Board can learn about what matters and how we need to prioritise our efforts."

Tom Spink – Non-Executive Director

Tom has more than 20 years’ extensive experience operating at board level, and 16 of these have been with Aviva Insurance working in a global capacity. Having joined the company in 2002 as Supply Chain Director, Tom had roles as  Creditor and Partnerships Director,  then went on to become CEO and General Manager of the Turkish arm of the insurance company in 2012 before going on to his current role as Procurement Director in 2013. Tom now joins the Trust with a real eagerness to make a change.

Tom said: "I'm excited about joining the Trust on its journey and making it one of the most effective ambulance trusts in the country. That's my real objective."

Alison Wigg – Associate Non-Executive Director

Alison has, for the past 20 years, played a crucial role in global telecoms both in the UK and the US, helping large multinationals expand their internal networks in up to 170 countries around the world. She is currently a General Manager with British Telecom (BT) where she has been an investment board member for the past six years working on the strategy for BT's global network. Alison is keen to bring her technological background into her new role at the Trust.

Alison said: "I really look forward to getting a better understanding of the NHS and the ambulance service, whilst also using some of my 20 plus years working in telecommunications to help provide other insights and experience to help the Trust move forward."
