22705 - 2019 - Mental Health Care

I wanted to know if you have a specific mental health car (similar to the one in London)? If not, what plans to you have in place for patients in a mental health crisis?

Do you just transport them to hospital or try deal/treat on scene?

I wanted to know if you have a specific mental health car (similar to the one in London)? If not, what plans to you have in place for patients in a mental health crisis?

The Trust has dedicated Mental Health Street Triage (MHST) vehicles in Bedfordshire, Luton, and Hertfordshire. Wider plans are developing regarding EEAST’s emerging model to improve care and service delivery to patients in a mental health crisis across our region, and there will be central funding available to support these developments as part of the Long Term Plan. These proposals will be developed in partnership with our Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and wider system partners such as Mental Health Trusts, and / or Social Care providers.

EEAST also has a dedicated Mental Health specification as part of our core 999 contract that determines how we respond to patients with mental health needs, including patients that are in mental health crisis.

Do you just transport them to hospital or try deal/treat on scene?

The MHST transports patients if / when required, but it’s main commissioned purpose is to try to treat and / or refer patients to the right healthcare setting for their need at the point of contact, which may include to safely discharge on scene. Often transport to hospital is unavoidable, but where alternative care and treatment can be sought to avoid a conveyance to hospital, this will always be sought
