We are requesting under the Freedom of information Act details of staff absences for the last ten years based on manual handling accidents/ incidents in your trust. As part of that request we would like the total number of incidents that occurred and the total number of lost working days for each year between 2008 and 2018.

The earliest data the Trust holds is for the financial year 2012-13. Please see the table below for the number of incidents per financial year taken from Datix incident report data.

    Search criteria:
    Manual Handling incidents
    Type: Incident affecting staff
    Subtype: Manual handling, or Bariatric
    Status: All except Rejected
Stage of Care: Accident that may result in personal injury

Year Total Actual Impact – Low/Moderate/Severe
    2012-13 260 206
    2013-14 425 415
    2014-15 400 377
    2015-16 374 351
    2016-17 373 360
    2017-18 340 324
    2018-19 326 316

Please note to determine how many lost working days a manual handling accident has caused, the Trust would be required to review each absence record in correlation to the Datix incidents reported above to note the number of days lost. Unfortunately our Global Rostering System does not record if a sickness is due to a manual handling accident or incident. The Trust has calculated to extract and collate the data required to provide you with the number of lost days due to manual handling accident would take over the 18 hour limit for a Freedom of Information request and as such unable to answer this part of your request under s.12 of the Act.

The Trust has provided the Actual impact of the manual handling incident in the table above; please note ‘low harm’ incidents might not result in an absence.
