22492 - 2019 - Siren Noise Complaints

I would like to know how many complaints about excessive siren use and excessive siren use at night you have received on a year by year basis for the last 5 years in Sudbury.

I would also like to know what, if anything, is currently being done in order to improve and better protect the health and wellbeing of the general public with respect to noise pollution from Emergency vehicles in the future and improve the situation, such as e.g. investment in better siren technology, volume reduction at night, review of the types of incidents based on severity sirens are used for at night/daytime, educating and reminding drivers about health consequences to the general public of constant exposure to noise and sirens, deprivation of sleep etc...

I would like to know how many complaints about excessive siren use and excessive siren use at night you have received on a year by year basis for the last 5 years in Sudbury.

Over the last 5 years the Trust has had a total of 28 complaints regarding siren use (2015-2016 to 2019-20 to date). Of these 28 complaints, there was 1 complaint with the location of Sudbury and the complaint was in regards to the siren use in the day time.

The use of the siren is at the driver’s discretion and there is not a night mode, the sirens are fitted to be forward directed and noise levels the public are subject to are within the legal exposure levels for dB.

The Trust has an internal news site which uploads messages for crews and employees to read. An article on use of sirens was issued as a reminder of certain points when using sirens. Please find attached.
