Please could you tell me the number of times taxis, police cars, fire engines or members of the public took patients to hospital in Suffolk and Essex, rather than paramedics/ambulance staff. For taxis, please specify the total cost of journeys, and include a list of the top five most expensive journeys. Please also specify mode of transport used, and reasons for using another mode of transport.

Please find attached the spread sheet FOI - 18063

Please note on our Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system does not record if police, fire or members of the public took patients to hospital instead of an ambulance. The figures on the attached spread sheet show the number of conveyances used by taxis.

The Trust use taxi’s when patients do not require paramedic intervention, but do require transport to hospital as they cannot provide their own due to various reasons; including financial constraints, no friends or family, isolated.

For taxis, please specify the total cost of journeys, and include a list of the top five most expensive journeys.

Please find below the Total Emergency Operations Taxi Use Spend for the Trust:

    Financial Year Total
    2016-17 720
    2017-18 17,021
    2018-19 Oct YTD 26,297

The Trust is unable to provide a breakdown of the costs to answer the questions for the most expensive journeys in Suffolk and Essex. In order to establish this information the Trust would be required to pull out all invoices for Taxi hire and work out the cost and area for each journey. The Trust has calculated that this would take longer than 18 hours to extract and collate the information you require. Therefore this would exceed the appropriate limit as defined by the Freedom of Information Act and we are unable to answer this part of your request under s.12.
