Date: 30 June 2015

  • Details:

The complainant stated that the crew refused to take them to hospital even though they had no means of getting there. The complainant had broken their finger and it was bleeding, the Police conveyed them in the end.

  • Findings:

The Investigating Manager spoke to the complainant, the crew and the attending Police Officer. The conclusions were that the communication by the Paramedic fell below the standard we expect; it was clinically appropriate for the complainant to travel to hospital with the police but this could have been explained better; the finger wound was not appropriately assessed and dressed; and the paperwork was not completed with the patient.

  • Lesson learnt / action taken:
    • Additional mentorship and training was provided to the crew in relation to the communication issues, the wound dressing and the Patient Care Record (PCR) completion
    • The Investigating Manager has re-raised the issue about paperwork completion with the local management team.
