An award-winning Cambridgeshire ambulance worker has achieved a major milestone by attending his 50th public engagement event.

Student Technician Steve Wainwright has been visiting schools, colleges and events in his spare time over the last three years to help teach communities about emergency care.

Steve, who is based at Peterborough ambulance station, brought up his half century this week and plans to continue his visits to raise awareness and educate the public about the work of the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST).

He attended Fourfields Community Primary School in Yaxley on Tuesday (23rd February), Park Lane Primary and Nursery, in Whittlesey, on Wednesday (24th February) and Eye jobs fair today (26th February).

During his school visits, Steve, who has worked for the Trust for four years, shows children the medical equipment the ambulance service uses and gives them a behind the scenes tour of an ambulance, as well as demonstrating its blue lights and sirens.

He has attended events in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Norfolk and is looking forward to the next 50.

“It’s been a blast. I did six visits in the first year and it has snowballed from there.

“A lot of the schools organise ‘people who help us weeks’ and the children really enjoy it. Hopefully it will encourage the next generation to become ambulance workers!”

Steve received a national Ambulance Leadership Forum (ALF) award earlier this month for his dedication to educating school children about the ambulance service.
