The region's ambulance service is one of only four NHS trusts across the country to be in line for two national awards.

Not only is the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) a finalist for Most Improved Trust at the NHS Employers Flu Fighters awards but one of the team, Dennis Clarke, has been shortlisted for Flu Fighter Champion.

Five categories make up the awards and EEAST and only three other NHS trusts in the country can claim to be a finalist in more than one category. The winners will be presented with their awards at a ceremony at Leeds City Museum on February 27.

The EEAST team was shortlisted after the flu jab uptake nearly doubled regionwide from 18.49% in 2011/2012 to 33.2% in 2012/2013.

Tracey Leghorn, Associate Director of Human Resources at EEAST, said: “I am particularly proud of the commitment and determination of all our vaccinators, both OH nurses and paramedics, to ensure the vaccination was available to as many people as possible to ultimately protect patients and staff.

“To be recognised by NHS Employers as a trust that has made significant improvements is a credit to the hard work and commitment of everyone that participated in this year’s flu campaign.”

The nomination for the Flu Fighter Champion award is particularly significant for paramedic Dennis who found himself seeking an alternative to frontline duties while in remission from prostate cancer.

Dennis, who has been in the service for more than 35 years and was diagnosed five years ago, was nominated for his proactive approach to the campaign, knowledge and enthusiasm.

He said: “The nomination is absolutely brilliant especially under the circumstances. I am incredibly proud of the Trust and proud to be able to continue working for it so to be recognised for that work is really great.

“This role has meant I can carry on providing an important service to staff, and indirectly patients and the public, as well as carry on supporting my family.”
